Tocqueville’s observation of the American woman in the 1830’s is still, if not more so apparent today. A day doesn’t go by without hearing how our leading ladies in the Republican Party are fighting to preserve conservative values in America. We must also do our part. Spring is almost here and it’s time for a re-awakening of Republican women across America. The courage and strength of conservative women stems from our passion to protect our liberty, virtues and traditional values. We must fight and raise our voices against the agenda of this liberal age. Republican women are the backbone of the Republican Party, the worker-bees of the grassroots movement, and we must be the engine behind the drive that pushes Republicans to an overwhelming win in 2012.

Last week, the Republican women in Texas put their foot in the door and are on the verge of a conservative stampede. The Texas Federation of Republican Women celebrated Legislative Day in Austin on March 2 and 3 and were rejuvenated and motivated by many honored speakers and guests. As well noted by TFRW President, Rebecca Bradford, “We all know this is no time to stop or rest. It is time to keep ourselves informed, share our knowledge with others, grow our clubs so we will have many more volunteers in the future and get ready for the 2012!” Prepare for the Republican Stampede!

February Meeting Recap

Our February meeting was a full house. With speaker Justice Robert Fillmore’s talk about the United States Constitution, members and guests left with a better understanding of the development of the document. Fillmore explained the revolutionary idea of the concept that our rights were derived naturally, not through a human ruler or king. The ongoing interpretation of the document has created a progression that puts us in the financial predicament we are in now. He points out that the debate has been about how much power should the national government have? Initial interpretations by the courts were meant to regulate commerce amongst the states so that a national marketplace could be developed. But Fillmore states that over time, the interpretation of this has affected almost every aspect of our lives. He added that the New Deal during the Depression increased Federal authority and the Supreme Court began to expand the reading of the Commerce Clause. After noting other cases that use this clause for justification, he told the group that it is the same clause used for Obamacare.

Fillmore gave a wealth of information about how we are affected by the decisions that are made about the interpretation of the Constitution.He encouraged everyone to make themselves familiar with the governing document and make our voices heard when the Constitution needs protecting.

“A primary object…should be the education of our youth in the science of government. In a republic, what species of knowledge can be equally important? And what duty more pressing…than communicating it to those who are to be the future guardians of the liberties of the country?”

State Representative Lance Gooden also attended our meeting and gave a brief legislative update. At the time of our meeting, the Legislative Session had just begun, so he did not have much to report. He did answer questions and there was some discussion.
