GEARING UP FOR NOVEMBER

September is here. There are less than 60 days to the November 2 election, and the candidates are on the move. The ninth anniversary of September 11 has passed with the knowledge that many have not forgotten that dreadful day. Our ladies put out the flags at the Kaufman Veterans Memorial to help commemorate the day – good job ladies.
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend Republican Headquarters Grand opening or the Hensarling event but I hear they were a great success. I hope that many of you will volunteer some of your time at the Kaufman GOP headquarters this year. Getting signs out for the statewide candidates is a must as well as for our two local candidates: Laura Hughes (County Clerk) and Eric Williams (PCT 1 Justice of the Peace candidate). There are also some candidates in neighboring Dallas County that need our help – Cindy Burkett (State Representative candidate) and KCRW member Suzie Smith’s sister Beverly Martell-Dingess (Dallas County Clerk candidate).
Linda Robinson from the D/FW USO will be our speaker at our October 16th meeting. We will also have a sign up sheet for working the booth at the Scarecrow Festival. If you want premium times, contact me before the meeting. Be sure to be there and bring a friend.
CARING FOR AMERICA

As we focus on the upcoming elections and approaching holidays, we must not forget those who are making the greatest sacrifices for our freedom. At the meeting in October, the program focus will be our “Caring for America” project. As Republican women, we should set an example and show that we are caring and responsible members of the community.
Linda Robinson, Volunteer Coordinator for the DFW Airport USO, will be our guest speaker and will discuss various services the USO provides for our military men and women. She will also present suggestions on how we can support their efforts.
Robinson trains volunteers who support the DFW USO’s operations, and has worked with the USO since July 2004. In October 2008, she returned from serving thirteen months as Program Manager at the Joint Base Balad USO in Iraq, which was the first USO in that country. While there, she was instrumental in the start-up and operation of “United Through Reading”, a program that sends children’s books to families of deployed soldiers, along with a DVD of the soldier reading the book to the significant child in their life.
Robinson shares this dedication of service and love of Country with her son, who recently returned from his second deployment, serving with the Texas National Guard in Iraq.

Our KCRW September meeting was motivating to say the least. Roger Williams, businessman, Chairman of Texas Victory 2008 and candidate for U.S. Senate, spoke to the group about the importance of involvement in the election process. He says, “Republicans must run through the finish line in November.”
He explained how entrepreneurship is under attack and we need to fight to protect the American dream. This can be 
accomplished by electing people who have answers…and that will do what they say they will do.
His message in a nutshell: Don’t watch the parade from the porch, get up and lead the parade down main street.

AGAINST OBAMA LAWSUIT

Coalition members from 24 states call on U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse injunction protecting illegal alien invaders over Constitutional rights of American citizens. The following was released by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe of the 12th District of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on September 13th.
HARRISBURG— Pennsylvania State Representative and State Legislators for Legal Immigration (SLLI) founder Daryl Metcalfe announced today that this nationwide coalition of state lawmakers has filed an amicus brief with the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals against the Obama administration’s legal challenge to Arizona’s newly enacted illegal alien apprehension and deportation law (Senate Bill 1070).
“The Obama administration’s willingness to bow down to tyrannical dictators and support the use of taxpayer dollars to build the Ground Zero mosque are just some of the most recent examples of how this President has abusively wielded the leviathan power of the federal government to blatantly side with hostile foreign regimes in opposition to his sworn Constitutional duty to protect the lives, liberty and property of every American citizen,” said Metcalfe. “It is beyond unconscionable for the Obama administration to launch a taxpayer-funded lawsuit against the state of Arizona for passing a common sense law that is in full accordance with Article 4, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution which clearly states that our government: ‘shall guarantee to every state in this Union a Republican form of government and shall protect each of them against INVASION.’”
SLLI’s amicus brief was filed on behalf of the state of Arizona and Governor Jan Brewer with the assistance of Judicial Watch (JudicialWatch.org). Signed by a total of 51 state lawmakers from 24 state legislatures, the brief urges the court to reverse the preliminary injunction granted on July 28, 2010, and allow all the provisions of Senate Bill 1070 to be enforced immediately.
According to the brief, giving state and local law enforcement full authority to apprehend illegal aliens for deportation as provided for in Senate Bill 1070 is:
· Not a violation of the Supremacy Clause or pre-empted by federal law;
· Entirely consistent with the “dual system” of sovereignty between the
states and the federal government;· No way an obstacle to the enforcement of federal immigration law as
alleged by the Obama administration.
Including Pennsylvania and Arizona, lawmakers from 40 state legislatures, or nearly 80 percent of the nation, have now signed on as members of State Legislators for Legal Immigration. To view the amicus brief in entirety or for more information, visit StateLegislatorsforLegalImmigration.com
OLD GLORY

This famous name was coined by Captain William Driver, a shipmaster of Salem, Massachusetts, in 1831. As he was leaving on one of his many voyages aboard the brig CHARLES DOGGETT – and this one would climax with the rescue of the mutineers of the BOUNTY – some friends presented him with a beautiful flag of twenty four stars.
As the banner opened to the ocean breeze for the first time, he exclaimed “Old Glory!”
He retired to Nashville in 1837, taking his treasured flag from his sea days with him. By the time the Civil War erupted, most everyone in and around Nashville recognized Captain Driver’s “Old Glory.” When Tennessee seceded from the Union, Rebels were determined to destroy his flag, but repeated searches revealed no trace of the hated banner.
Then on February 25th, 1862, Union forces captured Nashville and raised the American flag over the capital. It was a rather small ensign and immediately folks began asking Captain Driver if “Old Glory” still existed. Happy to have soldiers with him this time, Captain Driver went home and began ripping at the seams of his bedcover. As the stitches holding the quilt-top to the batting unraveled, the onlookers peered inside and saw the 24-starred original “Old Glory”!
Captain Driver gently gathered up the flag and returned with the soldiers to the capitol. Though he was sixty years old, the Captain climbed up to the tower to replace the smaller banner with his beloved flag. The Sixth Ohio Regiment cheered and saluted – and later adopted the nickname “Old Glory” as their own, telling and re-telling the story of Captain Driver’s devotion to the flag we honor yet today.
Captain Driver’s grave is located in the old Nashville City Cemetery, and is one of three (3) places authorized by act of Congress where the Flag of the United States may be flown 24 hours a day.
A caption above a faded black and white picture in the book, The Stars and the Stripes, states that”’ Old Glory’ may no longer be opened to be photographed, and no color photograph is available.” Visible in the photo in the lower right corner of the canton is an appliquéd anchor, Captain Driver’s very personal note. “Old Glory” is the most illustrious of a number of flags – both Northern and Confederate – reputed to have been similarly hidden, then later revealed as times changed. The flag was given to his granddaughter or niece and she later donated it to the Smithsonian.
Flags were placed at the Kaufman Veteran’s Memorial on September 9th for Patriots Day. We will be placing them again on or about November 11th for Veteran’s Day. Volunteers to help with this project are always needed. Please email Donna Davis.
